Genuine Nature Experiences Snowshoeing in Rauris Valley

More and more winter sports fans are looking for peace & quiet in the mountains, and they find precisely that in Rauris Valley in Austria. For example, out snowshoeing at Kolm Saigurn valley head, where you sense the power of nature with every step you take in the midst of pristine winter landscapes.

A marked snowshoe trail leads from Alpengasthof Bodenhaus (1,280 m) to Kolm Saigurn valley head (1,600 m). Guided snowshoe hikes with a National Park ranger are offered twice weekly throughout the winter season. The free valley bus carries snowshoers, winter hikers and cross-country skiers from Rauris out to the Bodenhaus and return.

An absolute “must” for any snowshoe hike across open terrain is a true understanding of the dangers associated with winter, planning your tour taking into consideration the weather, snow and avalanche conditions, and equipping yourself appropriately.

Snowshoe trail in Kolm Saigurn

The snowshoe trail in Rauris Valley is marked and can be explored without the help of a guide.

Starting point:Car park at Alpengasthof Bodenhaus, Kolmstr. 6, 1,280 m,  
Finish:Kolm Saigurn valley head, elev. 1,600 m
Length:ca. 8 km
Elevation Gain:370 km
Time:ca. 3 hours on trail (simple route)

Route: from the Bodenhaus car park, south of the road to the bridge – now right alongside the Hüttwinkltache (ca. 300 m) – left across the footbridge – and along the street to the Jagahäusl (trail head for the mining theme path) – through the forest to the Rastmulde – uphill to the left – cross the road and follow the old Kolmweg to the "Schälplatz" – along the dry stream- climb up to the Gersteben and through high forest to the Kolm Saigurn valley head.

Guided Snowshoe Hikes

In winter, guided snowshoe hikes are offered twice weekly with a trained National Park ranger.

Magnificent views of the Hoher Sonnblick (3,106 m) and, with a little bit of luck, the opportunity to do a bit of wildlife watching during this guided snowshoe hike, leading from Alpengasthof Bodenhaus along a snowshoe trail to Kolm Saigurn valley head.

Meets:Bodenhaus car park at 10:10 a.m., returns ca. 3:15 p.m.
Fees: Euro 17 per person, children and youths (ages 10 – 16) accompanied by a parent are free. For guests with the Rauris Guest Card free of charge.
Requirements:Easy snowshoe or winter hike.
Other:The free valley bus takes you from Rauris to Alpengasthof Bodenhaus and return.

Rauris Virgin Forest is a pristine forest with centuries old spruce and pine trees. In summer, Rauris Virgin Forest – with its over 80 dark moorland ponds and romantic clearings – is one of the most popular excursion destinations in Rauris Valley.

Fees: Euro 17 per person (children and youths ages 10 - 16 accompanied by a parent are free). For guests with the Rauris Guest Card free of charge.
Costs for transportation and the sled are extra (ca. Euro 15 per pers.)
Requirements:challenging snowshoe hike, hike demanding very good condition, more than 3 hours of actual hiking time and/or steep terrain.
Other:The free valley bus will carry you from the center of Rauris to Alpengasthof Bodenhaus and back.
