Skitouring in
the Rauris Valley

The Goldberg group is aptly described as a ‘treasure chest’ for ski tourers in the ‘Meine Spur’ ski touring guide. In the Rauris Valley - and in particular at the Kolm Saigurn valley head - every ski tourer will indeed find what they are looking for.

Three thousand metre peaks such as the Hohe Sonnblick (3,106 m) with Europe's highest permanent weather station at the summit, the neighbouring Hocharn - at 3,254 m the highest peak in the Goldberg group, and the Schareck are just as tempting as the somewhat more leisurely Kolmkarspitz or the Silberpfennig... No matter which ski tour in the Rauris Valley you choose - every ascent is worthwhile! Far away from the hustle and bustle, here in the Hohe Tauern National Park you can enjoy the peace and quiet that can only be found in the mountains, magnificent views and ingenious descents. A real treasure trove for ski tourers!

The prerequisite for a ski tour in open terrain is to familiarise yourself with the dangers of winter, to plan the tour taking into account the weather, snow and avalanche situation and to equip yourself accordingly.

Marked ski touring routes in the area of the rauriser Hochalmbahnen

Would you like to get a taste of ski touring and don't yet feel up to the challenge of touring in open terrain?
Or would you like to train your fitness?

Then you will find the ideal alternative to piste tours at the Rauris Valley Ski Touring Centre: you can master the ascent via the marked ascent route and use the groomed pistes of the climate-friendly Rauriser Hochalmbahnen family ski area for the descent. The starting point is the valley station of the Kreuzboden chairlift. The route in the Rauris Valley Ski Touring Centre is open to ski tourers depending on the snow conditions, at your own risk and during the opening hours of the Rauriser Hochalmbahn (daily 9 am - 4 pm, and Fridays from 5 pm to 10 pm).

Marked ascent route in the Rauris Valley Ski Touring Centre

Along the ascent route, you will find information boards that provide information about the route, altitude and kilometres still to be covered, direction and total distance. Ski touring makes you hungry - that's why you will find catered huts along the route where you can stop for refreshments.

Kreuzboden - Waldalm

Length          4,23 km
Altitude metres 743 Hm
Start Kreuzboden chairlift valley station
Ziel Waldalm hut (serviced)
Route The ascent is moderately difficult, but requires technical ski touring skills. The route initially leads across a meadow, then climbs through a densely overgrown section of forest. After approx. 1.8 km, you reach the Kreuzboden toboggan run, which you have to cross - be careful!
At kilometre 2, you reach the first exit onto the ski slope, and after a further 20 metres in altitude you have reached the Kreuzbodenhütte (catered). Continue on route no. 4 Kreuzbodenhütte - Waldalm.

Kreuzboden hut - Waldalm

Length           2,11 km
Altitude metres 414 Hm
Start Kreuzboden chairlift mountain station
(For this option, you can take the Kreuzboden chairlift up the mountain).
Goal  Waldalm hut (serviced)
Route Above the Kreuzbodenhütte, the route leads through a dense section of forest before passing a steep section at the edge of the piste (exit option). From there, the route climbs steeply uphill through forest passages until you reach the Waldalmhütte.

The route is outside the secured ski area, there are NO control runs by the piste service. Alpine dangers are to be expected. We recommend carrying an avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel on every tour.
The transmission function of your avalanche transceiver can be tested at the two ORTOVOX checkpoints at the Hochalm and Kreuzboden valley stations. Use of the routes is at your own risk. The prerequisite for a ski tour is to familiarise yourself with the dangers of winter, to plan the tour taking into account the weather, snow and avalanche conditions and to equip yourself accordingly!

Rules of conduct ski touring centre
Rules of conduct in the Rauris Valley Ski Touring Centre

Observe opening hours: The marked ascent routes are to be used at your own risk and only during the operating hours of the Rauriser Hochalmbahnen (winter season daily 9 am - 4 pm). On Fridays, individual pistes are open for ski tourers from 5 pm to 10 pm. Warning notices and closures must be followed at all times.

Only use the signposted routes: The route is available to ski tourers at the Ski Touring Centre. If sections of the route cross the ski piste, ascend one after the other along the edge of the piste. Cross pistes quickly and with sufficient distance at clear points. The FIS rules for skiers apply on the pistes (skiers travelling downhill have priority).

Observe warning signs: Warnings and closures must be followed at all times. Always find out about the current snow and weather conditions.

Study the avalanche report: Before setting off on your tour, find out in detail about the current danger level (European danger scale for avalanches in 5 levels). Pay particular attention to the information on the danger spots (Where is it dangerous today?) and the sources of danger (What is the main danger today?).

Complete equipment: Adapt your equipment to the winter conditions and make sure your rucksack is light. In the event of an avalanche emergency, an avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe are standard, as are a first aid kit, bivouac sack and mobile phone. An airbag system increases the chances of survival.

Visibility and health: In poor visibility or darkness, please use a headlamp and reflective clothing. Ski touring is an endurance sport. Therefore, make sure you take breaks, have a sensible energy supply and have energy reserves for the descent.

Only ski on freshly groomed pistes at the edge of the piste: Overnight frozen ruts can severely affect the quality of the piste.

Dogs are not allowed on the pistes.

Learn from professionals: To make ski touring fun right from the start, it is best to get tips from local professionals.

Respect for nature: Do not leave any rubbish behind, avoid noise, do not enter reforested areas, respect protected and restricted areas. Take special care of wild animals in winter! Form car pools or use public transport to get there.

Ski touring paradise KOLM SAIGURN

The ideal starting points for many of the ski tours in the Kolm Saigurn valley head (Hocharn, Sonnblick, Schareck, Kolmkarspitz, Silberpfennig)
are the two valley head inns Ammererhof and Naturfreundehaus (approx. 1,600 m).

The Kolm Saigurn toll road, which leads from Alpengasthof Bodenhaus to the Lenzanger car park, is closed in winter. (Opening depending on snow conditions mid/end of March) During the winter closure of the toll road, shuttle services (for a fee) are offered from the Ammererhof and the Naturfreundehaus from the Bodenhaus car park.
